Florent Brenguier wins an ERC Consolidator Grant 2018

The European Research Council (ERC) announced on 29 November last that it would award its ERC Consolidator Grants 2018. Among the 32 winners hosted in France,Florent Brenguier received a grant for his project "FaultScan : Passive seismic scanning of the preparation phase of damaging earthquakes’.

Teacher-researcher in the ISTerre teamWaves and Structures, Florent Brenguier is working on predicting earthquakes, the most destructive natural hazards. The FaultScan project aims to develop a new type of telescope oriented towards the interior of the Earth that will aim to detect the faint movements that are the precursors to major earthquakes.

The original idea of the project is to use cities, road traffic or trains as a time-repetitive wave source to probe seismic fault zones in a similar way to a passive ultrasound system. The project will start with a pilot experiment on the San Andreas fault in California and then has the prospect of focusing on the larger, more nearby high-risk faults such as Italy or Turkey.
