Can mining make the world a greener place?

On the 3rd and 4th of December, an international scientific and societal event will be co-organized by two Horizon 2020 research projects: INFACT and PACIFIC (of which UGA is the principal coordinator), and the Natural History Museum in London. The aim of this online event is to bring together personalities with diverse backgrounds and points of view to talk about the place of mining activities in our societies.

The event will present 5 successive panel discussions, hosting international experts working in diverse contexts (research, investors for an ecological and fair transition, non-profit organizations, mining company, geological service, etc.) to discuss the following topics:

Where should we get our needed minerals from?
What mining business models would lead to sustainability?
Can mining be part of a sustainable society?
How does it fit into a circular economy?
 Who should decide?

The discussions are intended to inform the scientific community, as well as - most importantly- the general public, while at the same time engaging them in discussion and debate by allowing them to ask questions. In this way, the general public will be able to understand the issue of the metals value chain in order to make informed decisions.

The main strength of the discussion will be the large variety of represented point of views on the necessity and purpose of mining, while addressing the extraction of metals, their marketing, and their environmental, economic and geopolitical costs.

Finally, these exchanges between stakeholders and the public will bring to light elements and alternatives for improving and evolving today’s mining operations and thereby contributing to the goals of sustainable development for tomorrow’s society.
