Summary

PYROPE is a project funded by the ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche) for the period 2010-2013, in which the universities of Toulouse, Montpellier, Nantes, Grenoble and Strasbourg are involved. It aims to set up a dense network of seismological stations with a regular mesh of about 60 km in southwestern France and around the Bay of Biscay for a period of two years in early 2011. This deployment will be the first step in providing global coverage of the metropolitan territory, and in the longer term of the entire European continent. It will be carried out in coordination with Spanish partners, who will simultaneously install a network of stations on the other side of the border.

All the data collected will make it possible to considerably improve our knowledge of deep structures, to better understand how large geological structures (e. g. the Pyrenees chain or the Bay of Biscay) were formed, but also to specify the geometry of active faults or to improve the accuracy of earthquake location.
