Dynamos

We study the generation of the magnetic field of planets, and in particular the Earth, by the means of numerical simulations.
Our recent, high-definition, geodynamo simulations display many features of the Earth’s magnetic field.
See this article featured in CNRS-news.

The simulations can be used to understand the physics in the depth of the Earth’s core, and also to constrain advanced modelling and forecasting of the magnetic field, which is of interest for space weather.

The reversals of Earth’s magnetic field can also be simulated, and it is an active field of research in our study.

We also explore the possible magnetic field generation by precession in planetary cores. Our simulations are mostly produced with the XSHELLS code.
