Tectonic setting in northern South America - A complex interplay of two subduction zones.

mercredi 12 octobre 2022 - 10h30
German Prieto - Universidad Nacional de Colombia – Bogotá
---
The tectonic setting in northern South America is quite complex. The Nazca plate is subducting along most of the Pacific coast of South America (from Chile all the way up to Colombia), but in the north its continuation is still under debate. Towards the Caribbean intermediate-depth earthquakes are common (including the most active seismic nest in the world (the Bucaramanga Nest), but it is not clear if this is an expression of Nazca subduction, or as recently suggested the subduction of the Caribbean plate beneath South America. German Prieto will show recent results of tomography models and earthquake locations in northern South America to discuss its most recent ideas about the present-day location of subducting plates in the region.
