L’existence de couplages et de rétroactions entre tectonique, le climat et l’érosion a été théorisée à partir de modélisations analytiques, numériques et analogiques depuis maintenant une vingtaine d’années, mais la démonstration de ces couplages à partir de données de terrain reste très difficile.

L’objectif de notre équipe est de progresser dans cette thématique, par l’acquisition de données plus précises sur la chronologie des différents évènements afin de pouvoir établir des liens de cause à effet, par une compréhension quantitative de l’évolution du relief amenant à une meilleure compréhension des paramètres physiques responsables de son évolution et par l’étude des archives sédimentaires dans les bassins. Finalement, nous développons une nouvelle génération de modélisations numériques capables d’intégrer et de synthétiser les processus physiques d’une façon plus avancée.

Nous allions la connaissance du terrain tant en structural qu’en sédimentologie dans des chaînes de montagne emblématiques : l’Himalaya, les Andes, les Alpes ; un savoir faire unique en France dans l’aller et retour entre acquisition de données chronologiques variées (OSL, Cosmogéniques, Traces de Fission) et leur modélisation. Enfin, la conceptualisation à l’échelle de la lithosphère, via la modélisation thermo-mécanique, analogique et l’utilisation de données géophysiques des couplages entre les grandes enveloppes terrestres.

Nous abordons ces questions à deux échelles de temps et d’espace qui nécessitent des approches différentes mais complémentaires :

Tectonique‐érosion à l’échelle de cycles climatiques quaternaires

L’étude de la période récente du quaternaire permet de bien quantifier les phénomènes tectonique et érosifs et d’étudier les processus élémentaires en faisant le lien entre l’échelle temporelle de quelques dizaines de milliers d’années et les observations actuelles.

Tectonique – érosion à l’échelle orogénique

Quel a été l’influence du climat et de son évolution sur la formation du plateau du Tibet et de la chaine de montagnes de l’Himalaya ? Quel est le lien entre subduction continentale et formation des reliefs ? Existe-t-il un lien causatif entre les variations climatiques observées aujourd’hui le long de la Cordillère des Andes et les variations tectoniques qui semblent y être associées ? Bassins sédimentaires

Notre groupe s’intéresse aux bassins sédimentaires, comme marqueurs de l’évolution des paléoenvironnements, de l’échelle locale jusqu’à l’échelle des marges continentales et des chaînes de montagne. Pour ce faire, ses membres allient des compétences en paléontologie, stratigraphie, sédimentologie, géologie structurale, géodynamique, pétrographie, géochimie, radiochronologie et thermochronologie.
