Résultats de l'AO "Sud" ISTerre 2013

La demande de crédits "Sud" déposée à ISTerre en 2103 concernait l'étude de l'Albien supérieur en Tunisie centrale, qui faisait suite à celle de l'Albien inférieur et moyen, entreprise depuis 2004 en collaboration avec des collègues de l'université de Sfax, et dans une moindre mesure des universités de Tunis et Gabès.
A l'automne 2013, l'étude des coupes envisagées était impossible, en raison de graves problèmes de sécurité dans la partie ouest du pays, liés à l'infiltration de groupes terroristes chassés du Mali par l'intervention française de début 2013.
C'est pourquoi, les crédits obtenus ont été utilisés en novembre 2013 pour l'étude d'une coupe de la limite Aptien-Albien au Jebel Oust, déjà reconnue précédemment et située au Sud de Tunis, zone considérée comme sûre. Cette coupe, située dans la zone externe de la plate-forme tunisienne devait présenter la série la plus complète possible de la limite Aptien-Albien, incomplète dans la plupart des régions d'Europe. Un levé détaillé de coupes et l'échantillonnage des ammonites et de sédiments pour la recherche de micro- et nanno-fossiles ont été effectués.
Le premier résultat de cette mission a été de montrer que, là aussi, une surface d'érosion, localement marquée par une structure chenalisée, semble marquer la limite stratigraphique entre les étages. Cependant, la lacune stratigraphique correspondante paraissant moins importante que pour les coupes européennes, l'étude des associations de fossiles devrait préciser l'évolution des faunes au passage Aptien - Albien, et donc de préciser les critères biostratigraphiques permettant de définir cette limite d'étages. D'autre part, l'événement anoxique océanique de l'Albien inférieur (OAE1b, ou niveau Paquier) a été également enregistré dans cette zone très externe, sous la forme de calcaires bitumineux laminés.
Le reste des crédits à été utilisé pour avancer l'étude des séries aptiennes et albiennes du bassin d'Agadir-Essaouira de l'Ouest du Maroc, en complément du Programme PHC Toubkal (ex-Volubilis) co-dirigé par F. Giraud, K. El Hariri et E. Jaillard.
