Dominique JAULT

Senior scientist, CNRS

I aim to enhance our understanding of the deep Earth, focusing on the Earth’s core dynamics and evolution. To this end, I am conducting research about the Earth’s magnetic field and its temporal variations. My work benefits from analyses of magnetic data that are presently collected from the 3 low orbiting satellites of the ESA’s Swarm constellation. It presently consists of:

  • inference of mantle electrical conductivity from the investigation of Earth’s core dynamics
  • detection of wave-like motions in the liquid core and investigation of their propagation
  • comparison between the output of numerical simulations of the geodynamo and observations of the geomagnetic field
  • development of a reduced "quasi-geostrophic" model of the fast dynamics within the Earth’s core

CNES, ESA (Swarm+4D Deep Earth: core project), and ERC (https://graceful.oma.be/) have supported these works during the past few years.

I supervise Thea Lepage’s thesis (co-supervisor Nicolas Gillet) on the electrical conductivity of the lowermost mantle and Preshti Raggoo (co-supervisor Nicolas Gillet) on ’Inner core rotation, waves in Earth’s core and length-of-day variations’.
