Chocolate Sleuths
Objectives : Raise awareness of contaminants in food and reflect on strategies to reduce them.
For : Middle and High School Students
For : Middle and High School Students
Chocolate is delicious, but one that can sometimes pose health risks if consumed in large quantities…
In this workshop, students will discover how certain foods can contain traces of potentially harmful substances, such as cadmium in cocoa. After a short introduction, they will explore chemical, agronomic, and economic aspects through thematic fact sheets. Working in groups, they will reflect on and propose solutions to reduce human exposure to cadmium, which they will present and discuss collectively.
They will then learn about analytical techniques used to trace cadmium from the roots of cocoa trees to the cocoa beans, helping them understand how this contaminant moves through the plant. Finally, they will visit ISTerre’s experimental laboratories and uncover a few scientific secrets using a microscope!
A workshop that combines critical thinking, experimentation, and hands-on science around a topic closely connected to everyday life.
