A look back at the RGF Alps and Peripheral Basins field days

The "outside the walls" days of the Alps and Peripheral Basins project of the French Geological Reference Framework (RGF) took place from 22 to 24 June at ISTerre and at several geological sites in the surrounding area.

The event began with a field excursion dedicated to the Quaternary deposits of the Rhône Valley, led by Clément Fraysse and Romain Delunel (Université de Lyon).

The day of 23 June, held at ISTerre, featured a series of scientific presentations given by PhD students involved in the RGF project. The talks focused on the pre-Variscan history of the basement exposed in the External and Internal Alps, as well as on the evolution of the Western Alps, from Alpine orogenesis to present-day dynamics. In connection with the research carried out at ISTerre within the cross-cutting research theme "Alps and the quantitative evolution of topography", several permanent and non-permanent members of the laboratory also presented their work.


The event concluded with a geological field excursion on the Chamrousse ophiolite, led by Maureen Gunia and Carole Cordier (ISTerre). The excursion provided an opportunity to illustrate in the field the main results of Maureen Gunia’s PhD research, which revisits the age and paleogeographic significance of the Chamrousse Ocean.
