Nikolai Shapiro receives an ERC Advanced Grant 2025

A new recognition for Nikolai Shapiro and his research on volcanoes. A CNRS Research Director at ISTerre, he has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant 2025 for his DeepMagmaWaves project, which focuses on understanding how magma moves deep beneath volcanoes.

This is the second ERC Advanced Grant awarded to Nikolai Shapiro, supporting ambitious research projects at the frontiers of knowledge.

With DeepMagmaWaves, his team aims to better understand what happens beneath volcanoes, where magma is stored and moves before reaching the surface.

To achieve this, the project combines seismology with the development of “digital twins” of volcanic systems. These models will help reproduce and better understand the seismic signals recorded at volcanoes, taking into account magma circulation, the volcano’s internal structure and the propagation of seismic waves.

The goal is to better understand the processes that control magmatic systems and, ultimately, develop new approaches to monitor volcanoes and better anticipate volcanic hazards.
