Remote sensing and natural hazard management : workshop in Ecuador



For several decades, satellite remote sensing has been a key tool for studying, monitoring, and anticipating natural hazards, as well as assessing their impacts on local populations. At ISTerre, our researchers use it to monitor tectonic faults, landslides, volcanoes, and rock glaciers, applying methods adapted to different spatial and temporal scales (optical, radar, and lidar).

For the past five years, we have been training our colleagues in Latin America (Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia) in the use of these satellite data and tools. This year, we are organizing a workshop at Yachay University titled “Natural Hazards in Mountain Environments : Satellite Monitoring and Social Impacts,” bringing together around 30 students, researchers, and engineers.

A new feature this year : the workshop will also address the analysis of population vulnerability, offering an interdisciplinary approach to risk management. The event brings together geomorphologists, glaciologists, geophysicists, and sociologists, with the support of IRD, UGA, LabEx OSUG, CNES, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour, and Yachay Tech University.
