Quantifying the evolving impact of triggered landslides on mountain landscapes with remote sensing

Landslides play an important role in mountain landscapes by shaping topography and removing forest cover as well as posing a significant hazard to communities living in these regions. Earthquakes and rainfall are two of the main drivers of landslide activity. In recent decades, there has been a proliferation of event-scale earthquake- and rainfall-triggered landslide inventories derived from multi-spectral satellite imagery. These are used alongside data on the spatial properties of the trigger event and of the landscape to better understand the conditions under which landslides are or are not triggered. However, these studies rarely consider temporal variability in landslide susceptibility, primarily due to the difficulty in generating multi-temporal landslide inventories. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) time series can help to overcome this difficulty, allowing us to study the spatio-temporal evolution of landslide triggering. Using these data, we can obtain new insights into how landslide hazard and mass wasting evolves during sequences of earthquakes and storms and long periods of rainfall.
