Recent insights on the tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal diversity of mid-ocean ridges

The discovery of mid-ocean ridges in the late 1950s was a crucial step towards understanding plate tectonics. Since then, the magmatic, tectonic and hydrothermal processes that control the structure and composition of the oceanic lithosphere have been discovered and studied. As technological advances have enabled deep-sea exploration, first-order differences have been discovered between so-called slow and fast ridges, with in particular the pre-eminence of tectonic processes at slow ridges. Another key discovery was the fundamental importance of ridge hydrothermalism for the balance between ridge magmatism and tectonics, and for the exchange of heat and matter between the lithosphere and hydrosphere (it should be noted that these concepts, developed to understand the formation of lithosphere at ridges, are currently being used as a framework to explore the geology of transform faults, largely left aside until now). In this presentation, I will focus on two issues that have come to the fore in the last decade: the temporal variability of magmatic, tectonic and hydrothermal processes at mid-ocean ridges, and the assessment of hydrothermal fluxes and of their impact on ocean chemistry and biology.
