Tracking Greenland meltwater storage through mass loading deformation

The Greenland Ice Sheet has experienced accelerating mass loss over the past two decades, predominantly driven by surface melting, making it the largest single contributor to global sea-level rise. However, the dynamics of water storage, accumulation, and release within the ice sheet remain poorly understood. Our recent study introduces a novel approach to tracking the spatiotemporal transport of meltwater by analyzing bedrock deformation measured at Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations around the ice sheet margin. We detected anomalous subsidence in early summer and subsequent uplift later in the season and attributed them as caused by temporary meltwater storage. These findings underscore the value of GNSS data to constrain hydrological processes and improve projections of Greenland ice loss.
