Contribution of underwater geological observations to better constrain seismic and tsunami hazards in the Aegean Sea : the case of the Amorgos tsunamigenic earthquake (July 9, 1956, M~7.5, Greece)

Mapping seismic ruptures on the Earth surface provides important information for characterizing an earthquake: surface coseismic displacement, rupture length, number of broken segments, etc. When an earthquake occurs at sea, this work is often difficult to carry out, but it also helps to constrain the source of the tsunami generated. I will present the geological observations made along the fault system that caused one of the highest tsunamis in the Mediterranean in recent times, off the islands of Amorgos and Santorini in 1956, following an earthquake of M~ 7.5. These observations enable us to characterize the source of the tsunami and better understand its characteristics (run-up > 10 m). I will also present the ANR AMORGOS project (2025-2029), which aims to better constrain seismic and tsunami hazards in the Aegean archipelago.
