Understanding Earthquake Physical Mechanisms through Seismicity and Waveform Analysis

Understanding the physical mechanisms that control earthquake generation and the properties governing fault behavior is a central problem in earthquake physics. The rapid growth of seismic observations in recent years has created an unprecedented opportunity to exploit large-scale datasets to investigate these processes. In this talk, I will introduce how seismicity responds to periodic (tidal) stress perturbations across a broad range of frequencies. The modulation of seismicity by tides provides a valuable probe for constraining the effective background normal stress on faults at depth. I will also present a systematic comparison of rupture initiation for earthquakes of different magnitudes in northern California between 2000 and 2024. This comparison aims to identify both common and magnitude-dependent features during the nucleation phase. Together, these complementary analyses link seismicity and waveform observations to the underlying physics of earthquake initiation and the physical parameters governing fault behavior.
