A Unified Framework for Turbulent Rotating Convection in Geophysical and Astrophysical Systems

Here I will attempt to briefly present an analysis of rotating convective turbulence, as exists in planets and stars, which yields two sets of scaling predictions for the limits of slowly rotating and rapidly rotating systems. These hinge on the value of the convective Rossby number, RoC. Tests of these asymptotic scalings will be presented using a broad compilation of laboratory-numerical rotating convection and dynamo experiments in planar, cylindrical, and spherical systems, with good agreement being found with the rapidly rotating (RoC << 1) and slowly rotating (RoC >> 1) trends for heat transfer, velocities, length scales, and local Rossby numbers. The results suggest that, given estimates RoC in geophysical or astrophysical fluid systems, first-order predictions of the convective flow properties and dynamics can be made.
