Steady states of the core, Magneto-Coriolis modes and core-mantle coupling
Thursday 3 September 2026 - 11h00
Felix Gerick - University of Leeds---
Standing waves oscillating in Earth liquid core dominated by Coriolis acceleration and magnetic forces are known as Magneto-Coriolis modes. I investigate the properties of these modes using a linear model of the core to learn how the modes change as a function of an almost steady magnetic field and flow in the core, as well as how this class of modes may be able to exchange angular momentum with the overlying mantle, causing observable changes in the Earth's length-of-day.
