Detecting and exploring peculiar behaviors of the earthquake rupture process
Thursday 16 March 2023 - 14h00
Martin Vallée - IPGP-Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris---
Our understanding of the earthquake dynamics is fed by observations of individual events exhibiting original features in their rupture development. In this presentation, I will mostly focus on a large intermediate depth earthquake (Mw=8) that occurred inside the north Peru slab on 2019/05/26. This event displays a reactivation phase, starting about 35s after origin time, which can be explained by the dynamic stresses carried by the surface-reflected waves. The second earthquake of the 2023 Turkey doublet (Mw=7.7) will also be discussed to document its westward supershear development.
