Job description
Missions
Within the ISTerre laboratory, the fixed-term Experimental Techniques Engineer (IE CDD) will provide technical support for enhancing and modernizing tools for monitoring Alpine seismicity. They will also be responsible for deploying, documenting, and training users on next-generation software tools for the analysis of seismological datasets. This work will contribute to major research projects at the lab (ANR MADALPS, MACIV) and help strengthen ISTerre’s capacity to respond effectively to seismic crises.
Activities
Main Activities :
– Participate in the evaluation and deployment of — and, if necessary, propose — technical solutions for the analysis of seismological data based on recent methods (e.g., AI, template matching).
– Take charge of implementing specific modules in the SeisComP software suite (https://www.seiscomp.de/) to improve the existing seismic detection and localization system at ISTerre. Specifically :
– Integrate the NonLinLoc localization module (https://www.seiscomp.de/doc/apps/global_nonlinloc.html).
– Evaluate waveform correlation detection module ccloc (https://docs.gempa.de/ccloc/current/apps/ccloc.html).
– Assess the rtDD double-difference relocation module (https://docs.gempa.de/scrtdd/current/).
– Propose and validate automated data processing workflows to enhance and enrich the seismicity catalogs developed at ISTerre.
– Draft user documentation and procedures to enable qualified users to operate these new tools.
– Contribute to the analysis and improvement of the SISMalp seismicity catalog maintained by the laboratory.
– Participate in data analysis and catalog development within the framework of the ANR MADALPS and MACIV projects led by ISTerre :
https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-24-CE01-0721
https://maciv.osug.fr/
Secondary Activity :
Contribute to the development and analysis efforts aimed at improving the consistency and homogeneity of the SISMalp catalog.
Skills :
Knowledge :
- In-depth knowledge of signal processing applied to seismology
- Strong proficiency in Python, particularly with the ObsPy library, and Unix/Linux environments (bash scripting)
- Experience with Linux and Bash scripting is a plus.
- In-depth understanding of data analysis methods in seismology
- Familiarity with SeisComP software would be a strong advantage.
- General knowledge of database management
- Understanding of seismic data acquisition techniques
- General background in Earth Sciences
- Ability to write technical reports and documentation
- Proficiency with domain-specific software
- Ability to apply health and safety regulations
- English language – Level C1 : fluent spoken and written communication (per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
Soft Skills :
- Decision-making ability
- Ability to share knowledge
- Critical thinking
- Organizational skills (task and time management, planning)
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
- Autonomy
Desired Experience : Previous experience in a relevant application domain would be appreciated.
Work context
The National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), a multidisciplinary public research organization under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, is one of the largest research institutions in the world. To tackle the major present and future challenges, its scientists explore life, matter, the Universe, and the functioning of human societies. Internationally recognized for the excellence of its scientific work, CNRS is a benchmark both in the research and development community and for the general public.
Unit and Team Description :
The fixed-term Experimental Engineer (IE CDD) will be attached to the Institut des Sciences de la Terre (ISTerre) (https://www.isterre.fr/), a member laboratory of the Observatory of the Sciences of the Universe of Grenoble (OSUG) (https://www.osug.fr/) located on the Saint Martin d’Hères campus. ISTerre is a Mixed Research Unit (UMR) governed by six institutions (UGA, CNRS, IRD, Grenoble-INP, USMB, Université Gustave Eiffel). The laboratory’s scientific objective is the physical and chemical study of planet Earth, focusing in particular on the couplings between observations of natural objects, experiments, and modeling of associated complex processes. The laboratory employs about 300 people and includes many experts in seismology and space geodesy, recognized nationally and across Europe.
The Experimental Engineer will join the Geophysical Instrumentation Service (SIG) of ISTerre, composed of 15 engineers and technicians. The service’s mission is to provide technical support and expertise to ISTerre’s research projects related to instrumentation, to national observation services and resources of INSU for which ISTerre holds local or national responsibility (ANO-2/RLBP/RAP, ANO-3/RENAG, ANO-5/OMIV, SisMob), and to manage the G-Proge platform (geophysical instruments for teaching and research). The engineer will report hierarchically to the research engineer responsible for SIG and will collaborate with technical staff involved in seismic monitoring at ISTerre (2 people) and with the scientific leaders of various related projects (4 people).
This position may also occasionally involve fieldwork activities, such as maintenance of seismic stations in the Alps.
