Dynamic synchrotron imaging of brittle failure in crustal rocks

Deformations in the Earth's crust manifest into geological phenomena such as earthquakes and formation of shear zones. These phenomena have microstructural origins and can be better understood by studying material failure properties of rocks at microscale. I deformed centimeter scale non-porous and porous rock specimen and imaged the microstructure in 3D at every step increase in axial load using a unique experimental technique of in-situ synchrotron X-ray micro tomography imaging coupled with triaxial deformation. Obtaining digital volumes of the rock microstructure until failure facilitates tracking the accumulation of damage, localization of strain and underlying microstructural mechanisms that govern failure in brittle rocks. This thesis provides (1) detailed analysis of microstructural evolution in centimeter scale brittle rocks, (2) testing the theoretical models of failure proposed for heterogeneous solids, in brittle rocks and (3) identifying mechanisms of strain localization at microscale.
