Stabilisation of environmental DNA by minerals

Traces of DNA are released into the environment by living or dead organisms. This DNA is called environmental DNA (eDNA) and it represents valuable information for the detection of past and present organisms in various soils and sediments. eDNA is becoming important for monitoring of endangered and invasive species, reconstructions of paleoenvironments and paleomigrations, and for inferring evolutionary relationships between species. In water or air, eDNA degrades in matter of days but bound to minerals it can survive for millions of years. However, we do not know which minerals and conditions stabilise DNA making the search for eDNA random and expensive endeavour. Through batch adsorption and forced degradation experiments, I am developing a model to predict the preservation of DNA in soils and sediments. The knowledge of DNA-mineral interactions at the fundamental level will make eDNA extraction more efficient and potentially allow us to search for eDNA in so far uncharted archives such as lithified and low-grade metamorphic sediments.
