Exploration of the seismic background level (SBL) as a precursor of volcanic eruptions: cases of Izu-Oshima and Kirishima complex volcanoes (Japan)

Nowadays there are various tools and techniques to monitor volcanoes and forecast their unrest and eruptions. During past decades our capabilities and knowledge in volcano monitoring have greatly evolved. However, successful cases of forecast come along with the tragical examples of missed eruptions even at well monitored volcanoes. Seismic observations are one of the most powerful tools in volcano monitoring. In this presentation an approach using the seismic background level (Ichihara et al., 2023) will be introduced and compared with other known techniques for volcano monitoring. Also, with the examples of different volcanic environments, such as Kirishima volcanic complex and Izu-Oshima Island, the capabilities and limitations of this method will be explored.
