Séminaire ISTerre
From ocean waves to the Earth’s mantle
jeudi 12 septembre 2024 - 11h00
Séminaire Interne: Helle Pedersen - ISTerre, equipe Ondes---
Seismic surface waves generated by seismic noise are routinely used to retrieve images of the Earth. On the contrary, imaging the Earth with ocean generated body waves remains challenging; the Waves and Structures team is actively engaging in research on this subject. This talk is focussed on the composition of the seismic wavefield in Europe, and how its characteristics can be exploited to improve body wave extraction. As a consequence, it is now feasible to characterise the mantle transition zone beneath Europe using these body waves, to combine the noise-based imaging with other seismic methods, and to interpret the results through an interdisciplinary approach. This imaging work is carried out through a PhD and through a recently established ‘Focus group on the mantle transition zone: petrology, mineralogy, geochemistry and geophysical observations’, which presently involves researchers by the Waves and Structures and the Mineralogy teams as well as colleagues from Lyon (LGL-TPE) and IPGP. The talk will also present initial results from this collaborative work.
