My research focuses on the archaeometric characterization of ancient Roman mortars.
Cultural heritage materials can be the starting point for the experimentation of binding materials to be used in the field of constructions.
My project, DAPHNE (funded by the European Union, call : HORIZON-MSCA-2024-PF-01, type of action : HORIZON-TMA-MSCA-PF-EF, grant number : 101209231) focuses on the characterization of hydraulic mortars from the inner duct of ancient Roman aqueducts to deepen our knowledge about the formation of amorphous/nanocrystalline phases in the binder.
The first step is the characterization of historic mortars through synchrotron-based techniques (such as microXRD, microXRF and Pair Distribution Function analysis) to understand the composition and atomic arrangements of hydraulic binder phases.
The second step focuses on laboratory experiments aiming at reproducing the amorphous/nanocrystalline binder : different set-ups, protocols and conditions will be taken into account, to study the behavior of the same raw materials used in the historic mortars during setting and hardening.
The third and final step consist in characterizing the experimental mortars with the same techniques used for the characterization of historic ones, to compare them and asses the effective reproducibility of amorphous/nanocrystalline phases.
