Stéphane Mercier
My research focuses on the characterization and evolution of mineral assemblages formed in magmatic and metamorphic environments. I combine petrographic observations, geochemical analyses, and crystallographic modeling to understand the physical and chemical processes that shape the Earth’s crust.
A key part of my work involves developing automated mineral identification techniques using spectroscopic and microscopic imaging. These methods aim to improve our ability to trace the formation conditions of minerals and reconstruct geological histories at both regional and planetary scales
My fieldwork has taken me from the Alps to the Andes 🇨🇱 and the rift zones of East Africa, where I study mineral deposits associated with hydrothermal systems and continental rifting. I’m particularly interested in how fluid–rock interactions influence the genesis of economically important minerals and how they can serve as indicators of environmental change over geological time.
