Seismic swarm in Auvergne: Observations from the MACIV project

Since 16 October, a seismic swarm of more than 700 microearthquakes has been recorded near Ambert, in the Puy-de-Dôme department. Several tremors, some reaching magnitude 3.6, have been felt by local residents.

Nikolai Shapiro, provides insight into this seismic swarm, whose origin remains to be determined. The observations draw in particular on data collected by new seismic stations installed as part of the MACIV research project, which aims to better characterise the deep structure of the Earth’s crust and mantle beneath the Massif Central.

These observations help improve our understanding of seismic activity in the region and the geological processes taking place deep underground.
