L’ophiolite de Chamrousse : double témoin des océans anciens





Dans le massif de Belledonne, au-dessus de Grenoble, l’ophiolite de Chamrousse était longtemps considérée comme un vestige rare d’une croûte océanique cambrienne-ordovicienne. De nouvelles datations U–Pb sur zircon révèlent pourtant une histoire bien plus complexe.

À la base, l’unité d’amphibolites (460–520 Ma) correspond à un magmatisme lié au rifting continental de la marge nord du Gondwana, avec des zircons hérités du Protérozoïque marquant l’influence panafricaine. Plus haut, les gabbros, ultramafiques et dykes basaltiques (345–360 Ma) témoignent d’une croûte océanique dévonienne-carbonifère, formée dans un bassin arrière-arc éphémère au début de la collision varisque.

Chamrousse enregistre ainsi deux épisodes tectoniques séparés par 150 millions d’années : l’amorce du rifting du Gondwana, puis l’ouverture d’un océan arrière-arc. Véritable capsule géologique, ce complexe éclaire l’évolution paléozoïque de l’Europe et la construction de la chaîne varisque.
