Urban Seismic Imaging and Monitoring Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing and Six-Component Measurements

Urban areas are increasingly exposed to a variety of geohazards, including earthquakes, site amplification, subsidence, sinkholes, groundwater fluctuations, and infrastructure deterioration. Effective hazard mitigation requires not only accurate characterization of near-surface structures but also continuous monitoring of their temporal evolution. Recent advances in seismic sensing technologies are transforming our ability to observe and understand the urban subsurface. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) enables existing fiber-optic telecommunication networks to operate as dense seismic arrays spanning tens to hundreds of kilometers, while six-component (6C) measurements, combining translational and rotational ground motions, provide new opportunities to extract structural information from a single station. In this seminar, I will present recent developments in urban seismic imaging and monitoring using both DAS and 6C measurements. After a brief introduction to the measurement principles of these sensing technologies, I will present the methodological frameworks, and discuss their respective strengths, limitations, and complementary capabilities. Applications will include near-surface characterization, passive subsurface monitoring, seismic source tracking, and infrastructure monitoring. Finally, I will present the vision and ongoing development of UrbanSeismo-Agent, an autonomous urban seismology platform that integrates DAS and 6C observations with continuous monitoring, edge-cloud computing, and AI-assisted interpretation. By combining emerging sensing technologies with intelligent data-processing workflows, this framework aims to transform urban seismology from episodic surveys into continuous, scalable, and autonomous monitoring systems, contributing to the development of more resilient and sustainable smart cities.
